For times of change, here’s a piece that embodies strength and persistence in the voices over the sometimes obscure downbeat in undulating arpeggios and alternating rhythms in the instruments. The steady low end of the piano and drones in the cello observe the inexorable marching forward of time, while the choir and clarinet lead down the path toward the transformative chord progression at the end. Despite some rhythmic complexity, this is a straightforward piece to learn for singers in middle school and up. The lyrics are a recombination and melding of traditional blessings and well wishes for life’s journeys.
