Variations on a Theme by Machaut (2011)

Solo piano

Guillaume de Machaut was a Medieval French composer and poet who wrote the earliest known complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass attributable to a single composer. The polyphonic “Messe de Nostre Dame” was written in the early 1360s during the height of the ars nova musical movement. This work for solo piano presents the opening melodic lines of Machaut’s Kyrie and five variations on it.

Live performance by Grace Shimer, piano.
