SATB choir with organ
Text by Arthur Rimbaud; trans. Stacey Philipps
Duration: ca. 3:00
Rimbaud’s quick and emotionally effervescent poem perfectly captures the thrill and wild frissons of young love with just a few words on the hot-and-cold impulses of first crushes. Laughing lines of the choir combine with the organ that alternately dances joyfully or tries to rein things back in with solemnity and drama.
The linden tree in the poem calls up European folklore that links the tree with youth, love, good luck, springtime, marriage, joy, and romance, especially when it’s green and new.
