Morning (2016)

Vocalese on a Haiku About Getting Out of Bed
SATB with divisi
Duration: ca. 4:15
Premiere by Portland State Chamber Choir , November 10, 2016

Here’s a deceptively tricky piece about the evasive games we play when morning comes too soon, the bed is cozy, and we dance with the snooze button. The piece wakes slowly in 5/4, obscuring the downbeat with alternating entrances and emphases in different parts, perpetuating a sleepy, dreamlike state before dashing off in an off-kilter dance. In the style of a vocalese with a serious dash of humor in the simple text, everyone can relate to this early morning romp.
